There was once a servant who owed his king ten million silver coins. The king demanded that the debt be settled. In desperation, the servant pleaded, “Please, be patient with me! I will repay everything I owe. I beg you!”The king, moved with compassion, took pity on the servant. He said, “Alright, I’ll cancel your debt. You may go.”Overjoyed, the servant went on his way. But as he walked, he encountered a fellow servant who owed him ten silver coins. Seizing him tightly, he demanded, “Pay me what you owe!”The man pleaded,“Please, be patient with me, and I will repay you!” When the king heard what had happened, he summoned the servant and said, “You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not also have shown mercy to your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?”In anger, the king handed him over to the jailers to be punished until he had repaid the last coin.
The Heavenly Father forgives your sins
How important is forgiveness?
In fact, the king is like our Heavenly Father. God forgives our sins and debts, and likewise, we must forgive others for what they owe us. Forgiveness is not only a display of personal virtue and magnanimity—it is a vital principle in the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, “If you forgive others their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you.” And the Bible teaches us to pray, “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” So how can we not forgive others?
