The story of the ten virgins is recorded in the Bible, Matthew 25:1–13
The wise virgins prepared enough oil for their lamps
At a Jewish wedding, there were ten virgins preparing to escort the bride. Because of a delay, the bridegroom had not yet arrived by evening. Among them, five wise virgins had prepared enough oil for their lamps, while the other five foolish virgins had not.
When night fell, the bridegroom finally came! As everyone got ready to set out, the foolish virgins realized their lamps had run out of oil. The wise virgins didn’t have enough oil to share, so the foolish ones had to rush off to buy more. Meanwhile, the wise virgins went on to join the wedding feast. By the time the foolish virgins returned with oil, the bridegroom had already received the bride, and the banquet hall doors were shut—they could no longer enter.
Be watchful and prepared for the Lord’s return
What does this story teach us? This is a parable Jesus told about the Kingdom of Heaven. It warns us to always be prepared, so we can seize every opportunity—because once the moment is missed, regret may follow. We must stay alert and not be like the foolish virgins who failed to bring enough oil for their lamps. Every believer must live out a genuine faith, continually strengthening themselves in preparation for the Lord’s return. Jesus said, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” (Matthew 25:13)
