Inspired to Serve – A Story of God’s Love at 105 Gibson Centre
When Elena and Carlos fled Colombia with their young daughter in 2019, they carried many uncertainties but one unshakable hope: that God would guide them. Adjusting to life in Canada as refugees was overwhelming—new language, new culture, unfamiliar systems. Yet in their search for support, God led them to the 105 Gibson Centre, a place that would not only meet their practical needs but also transform their lives in ways they never imagined.More Than Just a Food Bank
Initially, the family came to 105 Gibson Centre seeking food assistance. But they quickly realized this was no ordinary food bank. Unlike other centres where people wait in long outdoor lines, sometimes embarrassed to be seen by friends or neighbours, 105 Gibson offers a warm, welcoming indoor space. Clients are treated with dignity. Food is thoughtfully prepared and distributed with kindness and respect.Even more importantly, the staff and volunteers don’t simply hand out food and send people on their way. They take time to listen, understand each family’s situation, and walk alongside them. For Elena, this meant being asked about her struggles, encouraged in her hopes, and prayed for when she needed strength. Staff also offered referrals for jobs and programs—showing genuine care for both her physical and spiritual well-being.
Elena recalls how these simple yet profound acts of compassion made her feel seen and valued:
“They didn’t just give us food. They gave us love, care, and hope.”
A Place to Grow and Give Back
As the family received support, they also discovered opportunities to grow and contribute. Carlos began teaching Spanish at the Centre, sharing his language and culture with others. Their daughter found joy in children’s programs, including camps and sports activities that nurtured her confidence and friendships.Slowly, 105 Gibson Centre became more than a service provider—it became family. The kindness they experienced inspired Elena and Carlos to extend the same love to others. With encouragement, they began serving newcomers and eventually started a Spanish-speaking church group to share God’s Word in their community.
A Ripple Effect of Compassion
The impact of 105 Gibson Centre isn’t measured only by food parcels or programs. Its true strength lies in the relationships built and the dignity restored. Through listening, praying, and caring, the Centre empowered Elena and Carlos to find stability, grow in faith, and become a source of encouragement for others.Today, they continue to serve wholeheartedly—teaching, leading, and inspiring others to know that God cares deeply for every person. Their journey is living proof of how compassionate community support can transform lives.
A Ministry That Makes a Difference
Many community centres provide food or programs. What sets 105 Gibson Centre apart is the way it serves with the heart of Christ. Practical help is always paired with compassion, prayer, and respect. Families are not numbers on a list—they are children of God, worthy of dignity and love.Elena and Carlos’ story is just one example of how God works through 105 Gibson Centre to bring hope to those in need. By meeting both physical and spiritual needs, the Centre reflects Christ’s call to love our neighbours. And as lives are touched, the blessing multiplies—turning recipients into servants and struggles into testimonies of faith.
